On that night known as the \u201cNight of Fire\u201d over 100,000 slaves rose up against their Haitian French overlords, burning every plantation and executing every French man, woman and child they could find.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One slave, names Saturday, dared save the lives of his master\u2019s two young white children, smuggled them to safety and fostered them over a period of 40 years.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Delivered through a series of epistles (letters), author\/historian Thomas O. Ott accurately describes the history and social landscape of Saturday\u2019s time, telling the true version of his life, not just what plantation masters and their families wanted and even demanded hearing.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Despite being a slave, Saturday was not only literate, but was widely read and spoke seven languages: Two were African (Ewe and Yoruba) two were Afro American (Haitian Creole and Lowcountry Gullah) and three were European (English, French and Spanish) Even as he unfolds his life\u2019s story, Saturday recognized the danger of releasing it during his lifetime, even to his \u201cboys.\u201d Thus, it was not until Saturday\u2019s death in 1850 that Philip Chartrand, the older of the children learned the true story of Saturday and the Witch Woman.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":192,\"align\":\"left\"} --><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p><!-- \/wp:image -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\r\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-369 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/storiesbyott.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/cropped-cropped-Thomas-Ott-Photo2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"250\" \/>Thomas Ott<\/h2>\r\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; max-width: 89%;\">Thomas Ott has earned his Ph.D. in Caribbean History from the University of Tennessee. He Authored <strong>The Haitian Revolution<\/strong>. 1791-1804 which stands as one of the important books on that subject.
